Cracking interview is an art; few ingredients mixed properly will result in sure shot success. In nut shell “It is an art of presenting Skill Sets with Positive Attitude, Flexibility, Adaptability, Willingness to Learn & Grow, and smartness coupled with application of body language”
Before we start ” 8 out of 10 hiring decisions are biased on the basis of age, religion, caste, region, dress code, physical build up, cleanliness, way of talking, eye contacts & abstractly on n-number of belief & factors”
Detailed steps are:Understand the job Opportunity. Customize your CV for THAT job. One CV for all, is not the right approach. (Remember if they are looking for apples you can’t sell them oranges). Visit company website, try to get as much info as possible. Because it is better to spend 30 minutes on net & using your network to find out, than to waste your day for interview)
Be formal dressed (If you can know a little about age & nature of person who is going to interview you, dress accordingly- Ask the consultant, in case your CV was forwarded by HR consultant. Search his name on networking websites like Facebook, Orkut etc.) A bright dress in front of 50+ yrs interviewer may not be a good idea.
Reach before 15 minutes of the interview time. Judge the surroundings, people working & their interactions. It will give you a brief picture of company for whom you intend to work & help you to choose the job.
Punctuality is very good but in case you have to wait, please wait patiently. Going to receptionist/ HR Professional every 10 minutes shows your impatience & negative attitude. OR If you can’t wait, leave with a polite note of thanks with a request of calling for interview again when convenient to both. Next time you will also come prepared, in case interviews are getting late. (Beware, if you leave, you stand a chance of loosing the job)
70% or more of hires are result of Positive Attitude, not of skill sets.
Here it means,
- Flexibility
- Willingness to learn
- Adaptability (Fitness)
Famous quote “Hire for attitude & train for whatever”
Human brain subconsciously takes about 25 decisions when meets new person & duration takes less than a minute. So, First impression is the last impression. A confident entry, Smiling face, firm eye contacts & warm hand shake will stage ground for cracking interview.
Usually first question comes… Please tell us something about yourself or some question like this.
Who steers the interview, interviewer or interviewee? You can!
Start with brief introduction your name, parents info, sibling info, education, first job, next job... & to your present job with details of your responsibilities & stop on your strongest point. Remember, your answer gives thread for next question. Now you have left the discussion on your strongest skill set & they are bound to start from that point. So you steer the interview.
Honesty is the best policy. Be honest in your CV, in your communications in interview & more important about your CTC.
Three reasons :-
- Lies will be caught & best medium is your body language
- Truth will get you the job faster.
- After Offer- Letter/ LOI; more & more organizations are doing employee verification, you may be caught & will end up loosing job.
Regarding your CTC, they may ask for your Current Appointment Letter, Increment Letter, and Monthly Pay slip.
Try to avoid words” No/ Not/ Don’t/ Can’t etc.” in your communications. For example if you don’t know an answer to a question, instead if saying “Sorry, I don’t know” better answer is “I’m a quick learner, if given opportunity I will learn it fast”
Never keep you arms & legs crossed. It represents negativity. Don’t use hands while talking & if you have to, show then you open palm. It represents honesty. For further knowledge please read Body language by Allan Pease.
Listen to the Interviewer & try to understand what he/ they are looking for & then offer them the same qualities & skills sets”
Be to the point & specific in answering the question.
Avoid showing your desperateness for the job; it may harm salary negotiations, if you are selected.
Leave with a positive note & thanks to interviewers.
If you are told to” We will get back to you”. Never call for feedback. Remember companies are more desperate for right talent acquisition then your job hunt.Wishing you all the best for success in your career progression.
